Class in the River - Atelier de Dommel, 2011

The Netherlands has nearly 1/3 of its land below sea level and has fought against high water dating back to the 9th century.

Thoroughout water management has resulted a lot of naturally overflown rivers/lands during high discharge periods, and aesthetically formed a very organized-looking landscape. While personal-expression in its landscape is limited, we occasionally see “illegally-built” docks along rivers, its informal liveliness has triggered me to give form to a space that allows irrational events to happen.

Inspired by the week when children’s work being shown public for the Carnival, I proposed an open-atelier to be situated in the river Dommel, where children can learn about the environemnt and water, while letting their art work be the source of poetry and irratioal events that are visible for the public.
